New survey: Leadership development in European organisations - Challenges and best practices

The Corporate challenge
DIEU – The Danish Leadership Institute is undertaking a qualitative study facing the challenges and best pracices of Leadership development among European organisations this autumn.

While European companies continue to make substantial investments in developing their senior leaders and top management, the field of leadership development is undergoing many changes. Some of these changes are driven by the evolving needs of the companies, as the rapidly changing world economy puts increased pressure on corporate leaders to perform. Other changes are occurring among the providers of leadership development programmes – corporate development departments, outside consultants, and business school executive education programmes. The one constant trend, however, is that leadership development is of increased strategic importance among all companies.

Study overview
The survey "Leadership development in European organisations" examines major companies’ leadership development activities. The study examines the trends, best practices, and drivers of this highly strategic area of business activity. It will be based on one-on-one interviews with senior leadership and organisational development professionals, consultations with thought leaders from service providers, and on-site visits to corporate universities and training departments.

Some of the main questions asked are:

  • What are the main challenges that companies face as they develop their leadership talent?
  • What are the commonalities among companies recognised as having “best practices”?
  • Are there meaningful differences across the multiple regions of Europe?
  • How do European practices, as a whole, compare to other parts of the world?

The study examines the following issues in detail:

  • Common training and development requirements for corporate leaders, current and future
  • ROI in leadership development programmes
  • Maintaining superior development practices in the face of budget pressures
  • New offerings from providers of leadership development services
