Communication and Dialogue
– get better at handling, controlling and influencing your communication
This course is about your communication with others – and, in particular, about the way you do it! You will learn dialogue techniques that give you a greater sense of being in the moment, practise dialogue techniques, and improve your knowledge of your communication skills. Three days’ intensive training in communication.
Who decides the message of what is said?
When your communication with others is going well, you don‟t think about it. It feels easy and effortless and you get the information you need. But what is it, exactly, that you are doing in those situations that makes it work?
This course is about doing even better what you are already capable of doing. Trouble can occur in any communication, or you can be surprised or irritated if others misunderstand what you say. BUT – the receiver decides the message. Therefore, it is important for you as the sender to make sure that the parties of the communication are “on the same wavelength”.
It is not what you say that decides the message – it is what the recipient hears and sees you say. Only 30% of our communication is content, i.e. words and expressions – the rest is behaviour, non-verbal expressions, undertones and emotions.
Participants
You want to clarify and understand your own communication. You know that your communication is not always perceived in the way you want it to be, but you may not know exactly what is wrong. On this course, you will practise various situations from your everyday life and receive feedback on your communication style. You want to get better at retaining the meaning of your messages and giving them more impact, so that you can achieve more influence in your daily communication.
You will benefit from the course, regardless of your professional background, area of responsibility and organisational position. This also means that you will meet an extremely diverse range of people with very different backgrounds. This again will help you gain a better understanding and acceptance of others.
Benefit
This course will help you develop and improve your ability to communicate with others.
The facilitator explains what the participants will take away from the course: “A specific, lasting change of behaviour as a „solution‟ to their problems (we don‟t solve people‟s problems – we dissolve them), concrete tools that enable them to conduct more-qualified performance appraisals, models/tools for giving constructive criticism/feedback to colleagues, insight into their own behaviour, and an opportunity to form new habits and learn tools for getting your message through, so that the recipient understands it.”
You will learn to:
- Establish contact with and be understood by others
- Control and influence a dialogue in the direction you wish
- Ask and listen
- Tackle situations in which you meet resistance during a dialogue
- Understand the respective psychological mechanisms that enhance and inhibit accurate communication
- Adjust your communication to your surroundings
Your company will gain:
- An employee who communicates their message clearly
- An employee who knows how to adjust their communication
- An employee who is able to handle a “challenging dialogue”
Course content
You will work actively throughout the course on developing your communication skills and your understanding of the relationship between content and process in a communication process. You will learn about crucial communication theories that are important for daily communication and dissemination.
Learning method
There is a close interaction between theory and exercises. Together, we will look at the theories from a bird‟s-eye perspective in order to understand some of the dilemmas related to communication that we experience in our daily lives. Subsequently, we will test the theories in practice, where it is about applying what you have learned, and then reflect upon the following question: “How can I use the new realisations professionally and personally?”
We will alternate between demos, exercises, fun inputs, walk and talks, group exercises, etc. We will keep focusing on involving the participants, as we know that learning happens through being involved.
- Group work: you will be working in groups, which helps create a high degree of intimacy and intensity. You will use the group for reflection as a team. You will practise exercises as a group. Here, the group acts as support and gives you feedback on your language, your body language, your tone of voice and your facial expressions.
- Personal coaching: you will receive individual coaching from the facilitator based on a specific problem of your choice. The coaching will be conducted in your group.
- The course is more experience-orientated than based on theory, as “Nothing is as practical as good theory – but it has to be experienced!” (Torben Frilund).
- During the course you will participate in walk and talks, which are used for specific discussions together with a learning partner.
Parts of the course that participants particularly like:
- The personal coaching sessions where they receive one-to-one attention
- The personal coaching sessions when they listen to the others
- Exercises in different types of questions

Facilitator
Torben Frilund, MSc in Psychology and licensed professional psychologist, has extensive expertise, professional insight and commitment to the topic. Torben is a vibrant and expressive facilitator, who bases all his facilitation on your needs.
Torben Frilund states:
In my facilitation, I strive to establish a good relationship with each course participant. Hence, the “dance of change” can really begin. The interplay between theory, exercises and reflection in relation to your everyday life is an educational must for me as a facilitator.
I often find that the challenges that the participants bring to the course consist of them having a difficult time getting their message(s) through at work; their focus is on the professional aspect, and, up until now, they have overlooked the importance of being able to communicate a message that the receiver understands. They are not aware that their communication affects others, and they find it hard to engage in small talk and thus often miss out on an opportunity to network; they are experiencing challenges in relationships with colleagues, etc.
How do you keep from falling back into your old patterns? More and more participants choose to retain what they have learned by following up on the course with personal coaching sessions with the facilitator they met on the course. The coaching sessions can be conducted either as personal meetings or over the phone. To set up a time, please call coordinator Susanne D. Hedegaard, Mannaz, on: +45 4517 6018. Price for one session of coaching: DKK 2,000, excl. VAT and transportation.
